About Us

Jackson County FamilyOUR MISSION
The mission of the Jackson County Family Resource Center (FRC) is to provide a framework through which community and family members may access comprehensive services in an impartial and empowering environment. The primary focus of the FRC is to support and enhance the presence of healthy children and strong families in a caring community, while fostering personal development.

What do we do?
We provide family focus activities that provide child development education and skills training to parents and caregivers, early intervention services, early literacy, home visiting and parenting education classes.  We also provide assistance connecting families with community agencies and services.

How do we do this?
All of our programs are based on the Principles of Family Support which promote respect for our families and their cultures and a commitment to working with – not for – families to achieve each family’s goals.

The concept of a Family Resource Center in Jackson County began to develop and take shape in the summer of 1995 when a family resource center task force sponsored community meetings in each of the townships across the county. Feedback from each meeting was compiled, and the information was shared with the people of Jackson County in the autumn of 1995 at a community dinner. The data gathered in these community meetings clearly supported the development of a family resource center in Jackson County. Many felt that a family resource center could help close the gap between the needs of children and families and the community resources available to address those needs. Viewed as a proven and effective way to ensure that children and families have access to the assistance they need to provide healthy, nurturing, and supportive homes, the task force organized as the Jackson County Child & Family Council.

The council is a team effort in every sense of the word. Community members have come together with professionals and volunteers from Smart Start, the Jackson County Health Department, the Jackson County Boards of Education and Commissioners, Southwestern Child Development Commission, the Developmental Evaluation Center, Smoky Mountain Mental Health, the Cooperative Extension Service, Harris Regional Hospital, Southwestern Community College, REACH, AWAKE, Mountain Projects, United Christian Ministries, the Jackson County Department of Social Services, Mountain Youth Resources, Family Preservation/Family Support, Jackson County Juvenile Counselors, and many others to get the work done. The Family Council has leveraged monies from Family Preservation/Family Support, Smart Start, the Jackson County Commissioners, as well as from private sources such as Jackson Paper Manufacturing Company, the Jackson County Community Foundation, the Jackson County United Fund, and GTE to renovate the building and to deliver services.
Jackson County Family Resource Center opened its doors September of 1996 featuring a conference room for small group activities and meetings, a large multipurpose room, a children’s play area, a family resource library, an outside patio area, a teaching and demonstration kitchen, a breastfeeding area, and an office which well be utilized on a part-time or floating basis by a human service agency and organization representative.
